On Painting and Musical Analysis: to the Problem of Interdisciplinary Research

ISSN 2308-1333

Abstract
In this article the author deals with the problem of applicability of musical categories and terms, and even the algorithm of musical analysis itself, — to the visual art. The criteria and characteristics of the pictorial work, according to which the need for such “borrowing” arises, are considered. The oeuvres of a number of artists are a major focus of interest — from the era of Romanticism (Ph. O. Runge, E. Delacroix) and Symbolism (V. Van Gogh, V. Borisov-Musatov, M. Čiurlionis) up to the various art movements of the 20th century (H. Matisse, V. Kandinsky, P. Klee).
