Musical Form as an Educational Subject at the Moscow Conservatory

Abstract

Musical Form, one of the key music theory subjects, has been traditionally taught at Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory both analytically and practically, which used to include the playing and composing forms of study. During the Soviet years, the subject was transformed into Analysis of Music Pieces, in which the so-called “scientific” aspect was emphasized. As a negative result, practical exercises were abandoned, and a series of essential parameters of the classical theory of musical form was lost. Their recovery, together with achievements of the twentieth-century knowledge, as well as the widening of chronological boundaries specified by the subject program, may lead to a new rise of Musical Form as an educational subject currently reborn.
