The Music Theory Society’s Journal

The Charter of the Music Theory Society founded in 2011 declares its main goal as favoring the music theory development and improvement. In order to reach this goal, the society is going, among other events and initiatives, to issue its own professional online journal. Here is its first issue that the readers may enjoy. It contains the researches that were presented in the form of papers at the All-Russian Scientific Conference “Music Theory Traditions and Prospective in Russia,” which took place in April 2011 at the Moscow Conservatory and became a stimulus to create the Music Theory Society.

This issue publishes the materials of the papers read during the plenary sessions and in the course of holding the conference section “Musical Analysis and General Issues of Music Theory.” The second issue will contain the materials based on the papers read in the course of holding the other sections of the conference: “History and Theory,” “Harmony,” and “Counterpoint.”

We plan to issue The Music Theory Society’s Journal every three or four months. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first and only periodical in Russia specifically dedicated to this oldest and most important area of musicology represented by different schools and a great number of researches. The online form will allow to discuss topical scientific and methodological issues of music theory in a notably faster manner, and this is one of the main tasks that the new journal is happy to allot.
