S. Chashchina. "Approaches to the Interpretation of the Harmonic Rhythm in Foreign Musicology"

Svetlana Chashchina is musicologist, art-historian, cultural anthropologist.
She graduated Nizhniy Novgorod State Conservatory in 1993 and St-Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts in 1999. In 2000 she defended PhD Thesis “Conception of musical duration (on the example of instrumental works by C. Debussy)”. Now she works as an associate-professor in Vyatka State University (Kirov, Russia), Chair of Cultural Studies and Journalism. She has got more than 50 publications.

Abstract
The article analyzes the development of the subcategory "harmonic rhythm" in a foreign musicology of XX-th century. Prerequisites for this approach are marked out in the works by H. Riemann, E, Kurt and H. Schenker. Particular attention is paid to the development of the idea of ​​harmonic rhythm and ways of its analysis in the works by W. Pistone, J. LaRue, C. Schachter, M. Yeston and J. Swain. Narrow and broad senses in the treatment of harmonic rhythm are proposed for contemporary musicology.
