Issues of the analysis of the seventeenth-eighteenth-century Italian opera

Abstract:
An issue of the position of the seventeenth-eighteenth-century Italian opera is considered in the context of contemporary music theory. The author emphasizes that this genre did not receive enough scholarly attention in Russia during the Soviet times. A historical relation between the da capo aria and development of the classical sonata form is traced. It is suggested that an idea of the genesis and evolvement of the seventeenth-eighteenth-century opera forms be supplemented and essentially adjusted in the context of today’s scholarly researches.
