Methodological Specificities of Music Studies: through the works of Russian Scholars

Abstract
Both the structure of music science in its historical development and the research methods that were applied within its frameworks are considered through the works of such major Russian theorists, historians and philosophers of music as Boleslav Yavorsky, Alexey Losev, Boris Asafʼyev, and others. A necessity to realize the specificity of the approach of the humanities, especially in the art studies, is stressed for the sake of using historical and hermeneutical research methods in a thoughtful manner.

Konstantin V. Zenkin
Born in Moscow in 1958. Graduated from Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory (Piano Department in 1981, Department of Music Theory and History in 1983). Ph. D. thesis: “Chopin’s Piano Miniature and its Role in the Historical Artistic Process” (1987). Doctor of Fine Arts; thesis: “Piano Miniature and the Ways of Musical Romanticism (1996). From 1982 to 2002 Dr. Zenkin taught at the Central Music School of Moscow Conservatory. Since 1990 he has been teaching at the Subdepartment of the History of Foreign Music, Moscow Conservatory (Professor since 2000). Vice-Rector for since 2009. Dr. Zenkin is the author of more than 130 papers on various aspects of music history, music philosophy (A.F. Losev) and history of piano performance (M.V. Yudina). He is also one of the co-authors of the book European Music of the 19th Century: Poland, Hungary (Moscow, 2008).
